Was Your Roof Damaged in 2021? It’s Not Too Late to File a Claim!
Here in Central Texas, we’re no stranger to severe, damaging hail storms that can devastate roofs, cars, landscaping, and anything else unfortunate enough to be left in their path. But while hail damage is a near-annual occurrence, some hail storms are simply more devastating than others, leaving many thousands of homeowners to file an insurance claim for hail damage to their roof.
In April 2021, our area was struck by a massive hail storm covering at least five ZIP codes in our region. The damage was widespread, and as we continue to repair and replace roofs here at Action Roofing & Construction, Inc., we’re still coming across homes that were damaged by this storm. When we identify the damage, our customers assume their insurance won’t cover it. However, for many homeowners, we’re still within the window to file an insurance claim for hail damage to your roof! Here’s what you need to know to file a claim for the 2021 storm.
The April 2021 Storm Was Truly Massive
Every region has “the big one,” whether it’s a tornado, blizzard, hurricane, or other natural disaster that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Here in Austin, our “big one” for hail storms might just be the one that swept through the area on April 15, 2021. This storm pelted homes in our area with large, damaging hailstones that left a path of destruction stretching from at least Burnet to Elgin and included (at minimum) the ZIP codes 78628, 78641, 78613, 78664, 78660.
This storm left roofers and insurance adjusters in the area booked solid for months, and even here in 2022 we’re continuing to diagnose and repair hail damage caused by this storm more than a year ago.
How Long Do I Have to File an Insurance Claim for Hail Damage to My Roof?
Here in Texas, the typical window of time to file an insurance claim for hail damage is up to two years following the storm event. The exact window of time available to file an insurance claim for any damage to your home depends on your insurance provider. However, this two-year window typically holds true.
When hail storms strike, we generally recommend getting in touch with your insurance provider and a trusted roofer as quickly as possible. This is because the process to file a claim can take time, and as long as your roof is compromised, it may be vulnerable to moisture intrusion and other sources of damage.
In other states, the window to file a claim may be as narrow as one year, leaving many homeowners to assume they could not file a claim for the April 2021 storm any longer. But we’re here to tell you there’s likely still time for you to file a claim!
Make Sure a Roofer Is Present for Your Adjustment
When you file an insurance claim for hail damage to your roof, your insurance provider will schedule a time for an insurance adjuster to visit your property and assess the damages. During this inspection, it’s a good idea to also have a professional roofer present.
While many insurance adjusters are adept at spotting damage, asking a roofer to walk the property with your adjuster removes the guesswork from the equation. Roofers are seasoned experts in evaluating hail damage, and they will ensure that no damage is overlooked in substantiating your claim.
