What to Do If Insurance Denied Your Roof Claim

Unsure of Your Options Following a Denied Insurance Claim?

Significant roof damage can leave you and your family feeling vulnerable—but what can you do if your insurance provider has denied your roof claim? A denied claim for roof damage can make you feel downright helpless, but it isn’t the end of the line. There are further actions you can take to substantiate and re-file your insurance claim to receive coverage, provided you follow the appropriate steps—and follow them promptly, because the clock is ticking.

At Action Roofing & Construction Inc., we pride ourselves on being true customer advocates. We are there through thick and thin to help our customers receive coverage for their roof repairs and emergency roofing needs. If your insurance has denied your claim for roof damage, here’s what you should do immediately.

Review Your Insurance Policy

No two insurance policies are the same. Having a full understanding of your coverage is important at any time, but it’s especially meaningful as you begin the process of disputing a denied claim.

Carefully look over your insurance policy and take note of the information provided. Review key details including the types of damage covered by your provider, types of events covered (such as fire, storm damage, and hail damage), all portions of your property included with your coverage, and the claim submission process. This last portion is especially crucial to understand, as you may have a limited window in which to file a claim.

Typically if you appeal a denial, your provider will honor the date you filed your initial claim—but this isn’t always the case, so it’s important to act fast!

Contact Your Provider for an Explanation

Now that you fully understand your coverage, it’s time to get in touch with your insurance provider. Ask them why your roof damage insurance claim was denied, and what you can do about it. If you’re unsure of any details they provide, ask for clarification, particularly with regard to key terms and important areas of your policy they may refer to.

Throughout the phone call, be as polite as possible. While this is certainly a stressful experience, the better you can keep calm the more accommodating your insurance agent is likely to be.

Get in Touch with a Roofer

With the details of your denial in hand, contacting a trusted roofing company is an important next step. When you file for reinspection, it will be important to have a roofer available to look over your property with the insurance adjuster. While adjusters have knowledge of how to assess damage to a property, they simply aren’t roofing specialists—meaning they could very well be overlooking crucial details and damage done to your roof.

When you have a trusted roofer present during the inspection process, they’ll be able to assist in identifying all forms of roof damage to ensure the assessment is complete.

File an Appeal for Your Denied Claim

With everything prepared, now it’s time to file an appeal with your insurance company. Some roofers will be able to assist you in this process if you’ve never had to navigate it before. For example, at Action Roofing, our roofing specialists are experts at working directly with insurance companies to appeal and (in many cases) have denied claims overturned.*

As you file for reconsideration, you’ll choose a date for reinspection of your roof. Make sure to coordinate scheduling with your roofing company to ensure they can send a representative to your property as well.
