5 Questions to Ask a Roofing Contractor

Learn How to Find the Best Roofer!

As you go about finding a roofing contractor for your roof repair or replacement, you may find it difficult to narrow down your options. After all, any roofing company can look good on paper (or online). But what are they like in real life? If you’re facing this difficulty, we recommend speaking directly with each candidate roofing contractor to ask a few key questions.

At Action Roofing & Construction Inc, we always recommend speaking directly with a roofer before hiring them. Getting direct answers to your questions will not only provide you with information, but it will also give you an idea of the roofing company’s communication skills. After all, if a roofing contractor won’t answer the questions you ask now, how will you be able to talk to them during your project? Here are 5 key questions to ask a roofing contractor.

Are You Licensed and Insured?

Without exception, the first question you should ask any roofer is whether they’re fully licensed and insured. Licensing establishes their credentials as a skilled and qualified roofer who can build (or repair) a roof while meeting all code, regulations, and safety requirements.

While it may seem like licensing alone would be enough, it’s also important to make sure your roofer is insured as well. Liability insurance protects you as the property owner from being held liable for any damage done to your property or injuries that occur during a roofing project. If you hire an uninsured roofer, you may be held monetarily responsible for any such accidents. Never hire an unlicensed or uninsured roofer—always ask to see proof of their credentials!

Do You Offer a Workmanship Warranty?

Any roofer can claim to do quality roofing work. However, it takes a skilled roofer to be able to firmly stand behind their workmanship with a warranty. Workmanship warranties provide protection against any issues that may arise due to faulty installation. They may cover your roof for as little as a few months to lengthier periods as long as five years.

As long as you’re on the subject of warranties, it doesn’t hurt to ask what manufacturer’s warranties your roofing contractor offers as well. Roofers with certain qualifications are able to offer better warranties covering products from specific manufacturers.

At Action Roofing, we provide both a five-year workmanship warranty as well as a limited lifetime warranty on GAF roofing materials.

Are You a Local Roofing Contractor?

Hiring local is important in roofing. Local roofers have a better understanding of building code and regulations in your area, as well as what materials stand up best within the unique climate in your region. Hiring a nearby roofer also means they’ll be able to respond more quickly in the event of a roofing emergency!

As you ask questions of each roofing contractor, be sure to confirm their physical address and phone number to make sure they’re located within your city or close by.

Can You Provide References?

Sometimes roofing work speaks for itself—but it doesn’t hurt to have happy customers confirming the quality of a roofing contractor. References can give unique insights into not just a roofer’s quality of work, but the customer experience they provide.

If a roofer treats each customer as just another paycheck, they’ll have a harder time providing glowing references from customers recommending their work.

Who Can I Contact If I Have More Questions?

Any roofing contractor will be open to questions if they know it will help them make a sale. However, a good attribute to look for in a high-quality is their ability to communicate openly and clearly. Asking this question will ensure that your roofer is prepared to communicate throughout your roofing project.

Having a phone number at the ready is great—if they provide a direct line to the company owner, that’s even better!
