Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park – A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Austin

A hidden gem in the heart of Austin, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park offers hiking trails, a pool, sports facilities, and much more. It’s a great place for a day of fun with the whole family, including your furry friends.

This park has miles of mountain bike trails that are perfect for beginners. To start, ride from the parking lot on BMX Loop around the dirt jump track and then follow the “P” markings to Power Line Hill. Click for more.

Hiking and Biking Trails

One of the best places to go hiking and biking in Austin is the Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. The expansive 293-acre park features miles of paved trails, off leash dog area, a swimming pool, sports, and recreational facilities, and more.

If you want a bike trail that is suitable for all levels of bikers, try the Northern Walnut Creek Trail. It covers 13.8 miles and is comprised of a mix of gravel, dirt, and paved sections making it ideal for beginner and expert bikers alike.

Another great option is the Roy and Ann Butler Hike and Bike Trail. The 10-mile loop around Lady Bird Lake is easy and offers a scenic view of the downtown city skyline. Lastly, the Bee Cave Park Loop is an easy trail that is perfect for casual bikers, kids, and groups. It takes less than 30 minutes to complete and is a perfect way to get some exercise while enjoying the beauty of nature.

Swimming Pool

A hidden gem for the whole family, this pool is spacious and rarely crowded! The kid’s pool features a mushroom-shaped water structure, while the lap lanes and deep end boast a few fountains for splashing. The pool is also used for swim lessons and triathlon training.

There is no better place to go swimming when the temperature in Austin reaches an uncomfortable degree. Luckily, this expansive 293-acre park has plenty of pools to help keep the locals cool.

The pool is located behind the first parking lot on your left as you enter from North Lamar. The best time to visit is during the mornings because it will be less busy. However, the pool is frequently used for neighborhood swim meets and swimming lessons so make sure to check ahead of time to avoid a packed crowd! A great place to also visit is Austin Aquarium.

Fun Activities for the Whole Family

The park has a little something for everyone, from mountain bike trails for all skill levels to a swimming pool for cooling off. There are also paved paths for those who want to explore the park at a slower pace and a large off-leash area for dog owners.

The first thing big kids will notice when they walk up to Dove Springs is the sky-high slide. The rest of the sweet south Austin playground has plenty to keep them busy, including a musical garden with xylophone and drums (much better than a messy sand pit), a merry-go-round that is flush with the ground, and a fun zipline swing.

The Austin parks department is really prioritizing safe, inclusive green spaces for the city’s youth, and that includes big playscapes. Check out women’s top picks for big kid and little kid playgrounds in Austin.

Concession Stand

Located in the heart of Austin, Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park offers visitors a unique outdoor escape. The park has 15 miles of hiking trails, multiple softball fields, a pool, a playground, barbecue pits, and picnic tables.

The park also has an off-leash dog area. Your dog will love running up and down the hills in this beautiful off-leash park, especially if they’re looking for a place to dig!

Unlike many bodies of water in the city, Walnut Creek is free from blue-green algae, so it’s safe for your dog to splash around in the swimming pool. Just be sure to bring plenty of towels and sunscreen for all the fun!
