Hippie Hollow Park

UT students aren’t known for heading to Hippie Hollow, but it’s a popular spot for all kinds of Austinites. The only legally clothing-optional public park in Texas, this section of rocky shoreline on Lake Travis is where nude sunbathers go to relax. Read on to find out more.

This adults-only county park reaches capacity on weekends, so you may have to wait to get in.

What to Bring

Despite the name, Hippie Hollow is not a full-on nude park. It is, however, the only legally recognized clothing-optional public park in Texas. The park stretches over 100 acres and includes more than a half mile of Lake Travis’s shoreline. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing.

While Hippie Hollow is a fun and unique place, it’s also very popular and can get crowded during holidays. To help maintain a positive experience for all visitors, the Park staff will close the park once capacity is reached.

It’s also important to remember that this is a county park. That means there are rules and etiquette that must be followed, such as no lewd behavior or taking selfies in inappropriate areas. You must bring everything you would normally bring to a county park, including sunscreen and food and drink, but no glass bottles are allowed. Pets are also prohibited. Located at 7000 Comanche Trail, Hippie Hollow is about a 20-minute drive from downtown Austin.

Safety Tips

Despite its name, Hippie Hollow is more than just a swimming hole. It’s a full-scale park, with over 100 acres and nearly half a mile of Lake Travis shoreline. It attracts around 100,000 visitors each year and is a favorite place to sunbathe, swim, and picnic.

Though it’s legal to be naked in the park, you should always respect the privacy of other visitors and refrain from lewd behavior. The county has taken measures to ensure the safety of all swimmers by patrolling the area, but you can still get in trouble if you act inappropriately.

Remember, pets aren’t allowed, and it’s important to bring water, sunscreen, and shoes, as the terrain is rocky. Also, entry to the park is restricted to those 18 and older. Alcohol is permitted, but glass bottles are prohibited. Be sure to clean up after yourself as well! Browse around this site to check more places to visit.

The 109-acre park on the shore of Lake Travis attracts hordes of sunbathers, swimmers, and beer drinkers every year. It’s the only clothing-optional public park in all 7.5 trillion square feet of Texas. State lawmakers have introduced bills to make nudity illegal, but they’ve never succeeded. The reason is that it’s just a common fact of life here: People come naked to Hippie Hollow.

The only thing separating Hippie Hollow from the rocky shore of your local beach is an admission fee and an 18-year age limit. The fee costs $15 per carload (if driving) or $8 for pedestrians and bicyclists. Alcohol is allowed, but glass bottles are expressly forbidden. The only other restrictions are on lewd behavior, pets, and ground fires.

Hippie Hollow Park is open all year, but it usually reaches capacity on holiday weekends. Arrive early to secure your spot! For more information, visit the park’s website. You can also find it on Facebook and Instagram.

Getting There

With the exception of nudity, this county park is very much like any other in Austin. It has a beautiful shoreline, a few nice trails, and a whole lot of clear water. But it’s best known as the only clothing-optional public park in Texas. For generations, visitors have lounged the day away at this rocky shoreline of Lake Travis in their birthday suits.

But the naked lifestyle does make this park a bit of a wild child — there have been some lewd acts committed here and even a few nude weddings. James says it’s important for people to realize that this isn’t a place to gawk at the naked bodies of others.

The easiest way to get to Hippie Hollow is by car. From downtown, take Mopac North to 2222 West and keep going until you’ve reached Oasis Bluff Drive. You’ll see the brown signs that point you toward the parking area. If you prefer to travel by public transit, Moovit has a complete list of routes and timetables. Click here for the next blog post.
